The Alans, or Alāns, were an ancient and medieval Iranian nomadic people in the North Caucasus. Generally considered part of the Sarmatians, and possibly related to the Massagetes, the Alans have been linked by modern historians to the Yancai and Aorsi of Central Asia from Chinese and Roman sources. Migrating west and became dominant among the Sarmatians on the Pontic-Caspian steppes, they are mentioned by Roman sources in the 1st century AD. At that time, they had settled in the area north of the Black Sea and regularly attacked the Parthian Empire and the Caucasian provinces of the Roman Empire. From 215 to 250 AD, their power over the Pontic Plain was broken by the Goths. During the Hunnic defeat of the Goths on the Pontic steppes around AD 375, many Alans migrated west with different Germanic tribes. They crossed the Rhine in 406 AD with the Vandals and Suebi, settling in Orleans and Valence.
