From 2009 until 2017, he captained England's Test squad 59 times, setting a new national record. From 2010 until 2014, he was the ODI captain, setting a new national record with 69 outings as captain. He carried his bat to an unbeaten 244 during the 2017 Boxing Day Ashes Test, the highest score ever for a playing carrying his bat through an innings.
