Alexei Vladimir "Alex" Filippenko is an American astrophysicist and professor of astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley. Filippenko graduated from Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, California. He received a BA in Art Physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1979 and a PhD. in the Astronomy of the California Institute of Technology in 1984 where he was a member of the Hertz Foundation. He was a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley and was later appointed professor at the same institution. He was then appointed Miller Research Professor in spring 1996 and spring 2005. His research focused on supernovae and active galaxies at optical, polar, violet and near infrared wavelengths.
