Alford was born and raised in Nevada City, California. She decided by the age of twelve that she wanted to explore the world. Her parents were travel agents and she learned the skills of booking reservations and planning an itinerary from them. When she turned 18, she had already visited 72 countries with her parents. She had saved up funds by working during her teenage years so that most of her traveling expenses were self-funded.
