About Alice Walker

African-American poet and author who is best known for her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning novel, The Color Purple. Meridian (1976) and Revolutionary Petunias and Other Poems are two of her other publications (1973).

Alice Malsenior Tallulah-Kate Walker is an American novelist, short story writer, poet and social activist. In 1982, she published her novel Purple, for which she won the National Book Award for Hardcover Novels and the Pulitzer Prize for Novel. She also wrote the novel Meridian and The Third Life by Grange Copeland. An ardent feminist, Walker coined the term womanist to mean "a black or black feminist" in 1983.
