Andrea Bocelli is an Italian soprano and multi-instrumentalist. He was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma at the age of 5 months and completely blind at the age of 12, after a soccer accident. After playing evenings at piano bars and participating in local singing competitions, Bocelli signed his first recording contract with Sugar Music. It rose to prominence in 1994, winning the preliminaries of the 44th Sanremo Music Festival with a performance of "Miserere", with the highest score ever recorded in the newcomers section. Since 1982, Bocelli has recorded 15 solo studio albums of pop and classical music, the three most successful albums and nine complete operas, selling over 75 million records worldwide. He was successful as a cross performer, bringing classical music to the top of the international pop charts. His first compilation album, Romanza, is one of the best-selling albums of all time, while Sacred Arias is the best-selling classic album by any solo artist in history.
