Ants are carnivorous insects of the family Formicidae, together with the wasps and related bees, of the order Hymenoptera. Ants appear in fossil records around the world with considerable diversity during the Late Cretaceous and Early Cretaceous periods, indicating older origins. Ants evolved from the ancestors of vespoid wasps during the Cretaceous period and became more diverse after the rise of flowering plants. More than 13,800 of about 22,000 species have been classified. They are easily identified by their long antennae and the distinctive knot-like structure that makes up their slim waistline. Form herds ranging in size from a few dozen predators living in small natural cavities to highly organized herds that can occupy large areas and include millions. The larger colonies included many sterile and wingless descendants, most of whom were laborers, as well as soldiers and other specialist groups.
