Ascia monuste, the southern white butterfly or large pirpinto in Argentina, is the only butterfly species in the genus Ascia Pieridae. In this species, the sex may differ from the light or dark female. It is found from the Atlantic coasts and the Gulf of the United States, and south of tropical America to Argentina. It migrates along the southeastern coast of the United States, with destinations reaching Maryland, Kansas, and Colorado. The larvae have different body segments, which appear to have four to six segments. They are purplish green with two vertical stripes, and a greenish yellow color on each side and on the back. As adults, they are about a quarter of an inch long. The wingspan in adults is 63–86 mm. Adults have wings year round in southern Texas, Florida, and along the Gulf Coast. A. The monuste is a species that migrates in one direction throughout its existence and does not return.
