In September 2014, an Afghan politician was elected President of Afghanistan. He was previously an anthropologist who served as both the Chancellor and Finance Minister of Kabul University.
Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai is an Afghan politician, scholar and economist serving as President of Afghanistan. He was first elected on September 20, 2014 and re-elected in the presidential election on September 28, 2019. He was declared the winner after a lengthy streak in February 2020 and was sworn in for a second term on 9 March 2020. As a trained anthropologist, he previously served as Minister of Finance and Rector of Kabul University. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002, Ghani was a professor of anthropology at many organizations, then began working with the World Bank. As Afghanistan's finance minister from July 2002 to December 2004, he led efforts to revive the Afghan economy after the fall of the Taliban regime. He co-founded the State Effectiveness Institute, an organization created in 2005 to improve the capacity of the states to serve citizens.
