Aunjanue L. Ellis is an American actress and producer of television, theater and film. She started her acting career in theater and made her film debut in Girls Town. Ellis has starred in a number of independent films and starred in a number of mainstream films. Ellis is known for her roles in the films Men of Honor, The Caveman's Valentine, Undercover Brother, Ray, The Express: The Ernie Davis Story, The Take of Pelham 123 and The Help. On television, Ellis regularly starred in the ABC police television series High Incident, then starred in several short television series. She has had recurring roles in The Practice, True Blood, and The Mentalist, and has played roles in several TV series, such as Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story and Abdated: The Carlina White Story. In 2015, Ellis starred in the miniseries The Book of Negroes, based on a bestselling Lawrence Hill novel.
