Auston Taylour Matthews is an American professional hockey center and replacement captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. Born in San Ramon, California, Matthews and his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona when he was a child. After playing baseball and hockey as a child, he developed a special interest in hockey after watching the Phoenix Coyotes play locally. As a product of the American Hockey Federation's United States National Hockey Team Development Program, Matthews played for the Swiss National Federation's ZSC Lions before joining the NHL in 2016, winning the title of the Swiss Cup the same year. Matthews was considered by many to be the top prospect in the draft and was first selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Matthews became the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his NHL debut.
