Avery DeWitt Johnson is an American basketball coach and former footballer, the most recent being the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team. Johnson spent 16 years in the National Basketball Association as a player and then as the head coach of two NBA teams: the Dallas Mavericks and the New Jersey / Brooklyn Nets. He led the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals and three straight seasons of 50 wins. In his playing days, Johnson was known as "The General" for his short stature, leadership skills as a playmaker and close friendship with his former teammate San Antonio Spurs, David Robinson.
