Beck David Hansen is an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He rose to fame in the early 1990s for his experimental, lo-fi style, and is also known for creating musical collages of different genres. It has folk, funk, soul, hip hop, electronic, alternative rock, country and psychedelic music. He released 14 studio albums, as well as several off-album singles and a music book. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Beck developed a hip-hop and teenage folk orientation and began performing locally in cafes and clubs. He moved to New York City in 1989 and took part in the city's small but fiery anti-folk movement. Returning to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, he cut his single "Loser", which became a worldwide hit in 1994, and released his first big album, Mellow Gold, the same year. Odelay, released in 1996, topped the critical poll and won several awards.
