Frederick Benjamin "Ben" Carlin was an Australian explorer who first traveled the world in an amphibious vehicle. Born in Northam, Western Australia, Carlin attended Guildford Grammar School in Perth, then studied mining engineering at Kalgoorlie Mining School. After qualifying as an engineer, he worked at Goldfields before emigrating to China in 1939 to work in a British coal mine. During World War II, Carlin was appointed to the Indian Engineers Corps, serving in India, Italy and throughout the Middle East. After completing his military service in 1946, he emigrated to the United States with his American wife, Elinore. Driven by an idea he had in the military, Carlin suggested that the couple spend their honeymoon crossing the Atlantic in a modified Ford GPA, which they call the Half-Safe.
