Bille August RD is a Danish film and television director, screenwriter and cinematographer. In a career spanning more than four decades, he has received numerous acclaim, making him one of the most acclaimed contemporary Danish filmmakers. The August 1987 film, Shovel the Conqueror, won the Palme d'Or, the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award. He is one of eight directors who have twice won the Palme d'Or, winning another prestigious award in 1992 for The Best Intentions, based on Ingmar Bergman's autobiography. His films include La Maison des Esprits, based on novels by Isabel Allende; Smilla's snowy feel; Unfortunately; Night train to Lisbon, Silent Heart, a Chinese widow and a rich man. It has received five Robert and three Bodil awards for best Danish film. He is also a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog.
