Robert Louis Backlund is a retired American professional wrestler best known through his tenure at WWE, where he is a two-time WWE Champion and a member of the WWE Hall of Fame. Backlund's first reign as the runner-up champion lasted for more than 5 years. Backlund began his amateur wrestling career, competing for North Dakota State University Bison from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. He began professional wrestling practice in 1973 under Eddie Sharkey and did competes for the American Wrestling Federation. He then wrestled for the National Wrestling League and won the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Championship in 1976. Later that year he joined the Worldwide Wrestling Federation and defeated superstar Billy Graham to win the World Championship in 1978. He held the championship until 1983, when he lost the championship in a match against The Iron Sheik.
