In 1993, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Illinois's 1st congressional district as a Democrat. He was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and ran for Mayor of Chicago in 1999, but was unsuccessful.
Bobby Lee Rush is an American politician, activist, pastor and US representative for Illinois' first Congressional District, serving in Congress for more than two decades. A civil rights activist in the 1960s, Rush co-founded the Illinois branch of the Black Panthers. Rush was first elected to Congress in 1992. He won consecutive re-elections. Its county was originally located mostly south of Chicago, with a population between 2003 and early 2013 of 65% African-American, a higher share than any other congressional district in the country. In 2011, the Illinois General Assembly reallocated the area after the 2010 census. Although still a minority, since the beginning of 2013 it has 51.3% African-Americans, 9.8% Latino and 2% Asian. He was re-elected in 2018.
