Brenda Anne Blethyn is an English actress. She is the recipient of several awards, including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Cannes Film Festival for Best Actress and two Oscar nominations. Blethyn pursued an administrative career before enrolling in the Guildford School of Acting in her late twenties. She then joined the Royal National Theater and was known for her performances in Troilus and Cressida, Mysteries, Steaming and Benefactors, receiving a nomination from Olivier for her second role. In 1980, Blethyn made her television debut in Mike Leigh's film Grown-Ups. She went on to win the lead roles in the short sitcoms Chance in a Million and The Labors of Erica. She made her big screen debut with a minor role in Roald Dahl's 1990 film adaptation The Witches directed by Nicolas Roeg.
