Brendan Frederick Shanahan is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player, currently president and acting governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs, previously director of player safety for the National Hockey League. Originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils for the second time overall in the 1987 NHL Draft, Shanahan played in the NHL alongside the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers. While playing for the Red Wings, he won three Stanley Cup titles. In 2017, Shanahan was named one of the "100 greatest NHL players" in history. Thanks to his physical play and scoring ability, Shanahan scored 656 goals in his NHL career, more than 1,500 NHL games and at the time of retirement he was the leader among the NHL players actively scoring. . Shanahan is the only player in NHL history to have more than 600 goals and 2,000 penalty kicks.
