Freestyle swimmer from Germany who broke the world record. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she won gold in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle races.

Britta Steffen is a German competitive swimmer specializing in freestyle events. In 1999, Steffen won six trophies at the European Children's Championship and won a medal as a member of the German 4 × 200 freestyle relay team at the 2000 Summer Olympics. In 2004, she requested a 4 × 100m relay swim. But after the Olympics, she took a year off from swimming and focused on her unfinished schooling. At the 2006 European Championship in Budapest, Steffen scored 53.30 in the women's 100m freestyle, breaking the world record and surpassing the previous record of 53.42 set by Australian Libby Lenton. Although Lenton swam 52.99 on April 4, 2007 in the 400-meter mixed freestyle relay, this time was not recognized by FINA as a world record as the race was not considered a FINA event. At the same championship, Steffen was a member of two world record relay teams.
