Buzz Aldrin is a former American astronaut, engineer and fighter pilot. Aldrin made three space trips as a Gemini 12 mission pilot in 1966, and as an Apollo 11 lunar module pilot in 1969, he and mission commander Neil Armstrong were the first two. to land on the moon. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Aldrin earned third place in 1951 at the US Military Academy at West Point, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was included in the US Air Force and served as a jet fighter pilot during the Korean War. He carried out 66 combat sorties and shot down two MiG-15s. After obtaining a Sc.D. Aldrin was selected as a member of NASA Astronaut Group 3, becoming the first astronaut to have a doctorate in astronauts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His doctoral thesis is the direct guidance technique for a manned orbital rendezvous, which has earned him the nickname "Dr Rendezvous" by his fellow astronauts.
