Catherine Astrid Salome Freeman is a former Australian sprinter, specializing in running over 400 meters. She will occasionally participate in other track events, but the 400m is her main event. Her personal best of 48.63 now ranks her as the eighth fastest woman of all time and second after third by Marie-José Pérec at the 1996 Olympics. She became the women's Olympic champion in the 400 meters at the 2000 Summer Olympics, where she lit the Olympic flame. Freeman was the first Australian native to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal at the age of 16 in 1990. 1994 was her breakout season. At the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada, Freeman won gold medals in the 200m and 400m. She also won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics and placed first at the 1997 World Championships in the 400m. In 1998, Freeman had to retire due to injury.
