Charles Ernest Grassley is an American politician serving as Honorary Professional President of the United States Senate and a senior United States Senator from Iowa. He is serving a seventh term in the Senate, first elected in 1980. As a member of the Republican Party, Grassley served eight terms in the Iowa House of Representatives and three terms in the United States House of Representatives . He served three terms as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee during Senate majority Republican periods. When Orrin Hatch's Senate term ended on January 3, 2019 after his retirement, Grassley became the longest-serving Republican member of the Senate and served as Pro-Senate President of the Nation. 116th Congress from 2019 to 2021 , as well as part of the 117th Congress before Joe Biden took office.
