Cynthia Morris Sherman is an American artist whose work focuses primarily on self-portrait photography, portraying herself in a variety of contexts and in different imaginary characters. Her groundbreaking work is often referred to as the "Untitled Film Stills" collection, a series of 70 black and white photographs of herself that evoke typical female roles in performing media. During the 1980s, Sherman used color film and large prints, and focused more on costumes, lighting, and facial expressions. In 1995, Sherman was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship. In 2013, she received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Arts in London.
