Clarence Thomas is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was appointed by President George H. W. Bush and is confirmed by the US Senate to succeed Thurgood Marshall, and is the second African-American to serve at the Court. Since 2018, Thomas has served as Senior Associate Justice, longest serving member of the Tribunal, for a term of 29 years, 117 days since February 17, 2021. Thomas grew up in Savannah, Georgia and trained at Holy Cross College and Yale Law School. He was appointed as assistant attorney general in Missouri in 1974 and then began to practice privately there. In 1979 he became an assistant legislator to US Senator John Danforth, and in 1981, he was appointed Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the US Department of Education. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan appointed Thomas president of the Equal Employment Opportunity Committee.
