He is the captain of the Peruvian national team, of which he is the fifth most scorer. Considered the greatest Peruvian football player in Europe, he is the most goal scoring player and the most successful Latin American football player in German football history. SV Werder Bremen's all-time top scorer, Bayern Munich's ninth-highest scorer and sixth in Bundesliga history and second-highest scorer of the 21st century. He is also one of the top 20 scorers in UEFA club league history and is South America's seventh top scorer in European football history. His professional debut took place in 1996, with club Deportivo Pesquero.
