Cormac McCarthy is an American novelist, playwright, short story writer and screenwriter. He has written ten novels, two plays, two screenplays and two short stories, covering Western and post-apocalyptic genres. He is famous for his graphic representations of violence and his unique, recognizable writing style that he has no punctuation or notes. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest writers of his time. McCarthy was born in Providence, Rhode Island, although he grew up primarily in Tennessee. In 1951, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee, but dropped out to join the United States Air Force. His first novel, The Orchard Keeper, was published in 1965. Receiving a literary scholarship, McCarthy was able to travel to southern Europe, where he wrote his second novel, Outer Dark. Suttree, like his other early novels, generally received positive reviews, but not commercial success.
