Cornelia Maria Funke is a German children's novelist. Born in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia, she started her career as a social worker before becoming a book illustrator. She began writing novels in the late 1980s and mainly focuses on fiction-based stories depicting the lives of children facing adversity. Funke has become "Germany's best-selling children's author". His work has been translated into multiple languages, and in 2012 Funke sold more than 20 million copies of his book worldwide. Funke is hailed as the author of children's novels The Thief Lord and Dragon Rider, translated and published in English after its first publication in Germany.
