Dannel Patrick Malloy is an American politician who served as Connecticut's 88th Governor from 2011 to 2019. As a member of the Democratic Party, he chaired the Association of Democratic Governors from 2016 to 2017. On 1 July 2019, he began his term as principal of the University of Maine system. Born in Stamford, Connecticut, Malloy graduated from Boston College Law School. Malloy began his career as an assistant district attorney in New York City in 1980 before returning to Stamford and practicing in private. He served on Stamford's financial council from 1984 to 1994 before being elected mayor of Stamford. He served four terms as mayor from December 1995 to December 2009. Malloy unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Connecticut in 2006, losing to John DeStefano, Jr., mayor of New Haven, who was defeated in the general election. by outgoing Republicans.
