David Jon Gilmour is an English musician, formerly a member of the rock band Pink Floyd. He joined as lead guitarist and co-singer in 1968 shortly before founding member Syd Barrett left. Pink Floyd achieved international success with concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. By the early 1980s, they had become one of the best-selling and most acclaimed artists in music history; by 2012, they had sold more than 250 million records worldwide, of which 75 million were in the United States. After Roger Waters left in 1985, Pink Floyd continued under Gilmour's direction and released three more studio albums. Gilmour has produced various artists, such as Dream Academy, and released four solo studio albums: David Gilmour, About Face, On an Island and Rattle That Lock. He is also credited with bringing public attention to singer-songwriter Kate Bush.
