In 1988, he won a bronze medal in the singles event, making him the first African American to earn an Olympic medal in figure skating. She won the 1986 US National Championships as well as the 1986 World Championships. In 2000, she was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

Debra Janine Thomas is an African-American former figure skater and doctor. She was world champion in 1986, Olympic bronze medalist in 1988 and two-time US national champion. Her showdown with East Germany's Katarina Witt at the 1988 Calgary Olympics is known as the Battle of Carmens.
