Elizabeth Ann Eckford was one of Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American college students who, in 1957, were the first black students to take classes at previously all-skin Little Rock Central High School. White in Little Rock, Arkansas. The coming integration is the result of Brown v. Board of Education. The public ordeal in Eckford was photographed by press photographers on the morning of September 4, 1957, after being banned from the school by the Arkansas National Guard. An impressive United Press snapshot of Johnny Jenkins shows the girl being followed and intimidated by an angry white crowd; This photo and other surprising events of the day were reported in the press in the US and around the world. The most famous photograph of this event was taken by Will Counts of the Democrat of Arkansas.
