Emoni James-Wayne Bates is a high school basketball player attending Ypsi Preparatory Academy, a school founded by his family, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. As a small child, he is 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. He was a consensus five-star player and a number one player in the recruiting class in 2022. Analysts called him the best potential high school student, regardless of class. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Bates is considered one of the top prospects since college. As a rookie at Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, he led his team to the state championship while also winning the Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year award and the MaxPreps National Player of the Year award. The following season, Bates became the first sophomore to win the Gatorade Player of the Year award. In the last two years of high school, he transferred to Ypsi Foundation Academy, a new preparatory school founded by his father.
