About Empress Michiko
She was born into a family of Japanese academics and married Crown Prince Akihito in 1959, becoming a member of the Japanese Imperial Family. Akihito became Emperor of Japan after his father died, and Michiko was given the title of Empress Consort.
Michiko is a member of the Japanese Imperial, which served as Empress of Japan as the wife of Akihito, the 125th Emperor of Japan who reigned from January 7, 1989 to April 30, 2019. Michiko married Crown Prince Akihito and became Princess of Japan in 1959 She was the first civilian and the first member of a religious minority to marry the Japanese imperial household. She has three children with her husband. His eldest son, Naruhito, is the current Emperor of the Chrysanthemum Throne. As a princess and later queen to the queen, she became the best known and most traveled Empress in Japanese history. After Emperor Akihito's resignation, Michiko was given the new title Jōkōgō, or Queen Emeritus.
