After taking over as football coach at Virginia Tech in 1987, he led the team to several conference championships and was named the NCAA's top coach in 1999, receiving the Paul"Bear" Bryant Award.

Franklin Mitchell Beamer is a retired American football coach, especially for the Virginia Technology Hokies, and a former college football player. Beamer was a full-back for Virginia Tech from 1966 to 1968. His coaching experience began in 1972 and from 1981 to 1986 Beamer served as head soccer coach at Murray State University. He then became the head football coach at Virginia Tech from 1987 until his last game in 2015. He was one of the longest-serving coaches in the NCAA I FBS division and upon retirement he was the most active coach. at this level. After his retirement, Beamer accepted a position as Special Assistant to the Athletic Director of Virginia Tech, where he focused on the development and advancement of the sport. He was inducted into the College Football Fame Hall in 2018
