Funk is a genre of music that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a new form of rhythmic, dancing music through a blend of soul, jazz and rhythm and blues. It does not emphasize the progression of tones and chords and focuses on a strong rhythmic track of the bass line played by the electric bassist and the drum section played by the percussionist, often at a slower tempo with other popular music. Like most African-inspired music, funk often consists of a complex groove with rhythmic instruments playing intertwined grooves creating a "hypnotic" and "dancing" feeling. Funk uses the same richly colored extended chord found in jazz bebop, such as the minor chord with the seventh and eleven chords added, or the dominant seventh chord with numbers nine and thirteen are revised.
