He was one of cricket's best all-rounders, scoring over 8,000 Test runs and taking 235 wickets with his spin and seam deliveries. With the bat, he averaged over 57 and was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1964.

Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, AO, OCC, also known as Gary or Garry Sobers, is a former cricketer who played for the West Indies from 1954 to 1974. As a highly skilled pitcher, aggressive hitter and head hitter , he is considered by many to be the best cricketer of all time and one of the greatest cricketers of all time. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, Sobers made his debut with the Barbados cricket team at the age of 16 in 1953, and his test debut in the West Indies the following year. Initially, playing primarily solely as a pitcher, he was quickly promoted to the batting streak. In the 1958 match against Pakistan, Sobers scored his first exam score, advancing 365 points without going out and setting a new record for the highest individual score in a match. His record was not broken until Brian Lara scored 375 points in 1994. Sobers was appointed captain of the West Indies in 1965, a role he would hold until 1972 .
