George Elliott Clarke, Canadian poet, playwright and literary critic, was Toronto Poet from 2012 to 2015 and Parliament of Canada Poet from 2016 to 2017. His work is known largely for its use of a variety of literary traditions and artistic, lush physicality and daring political nature. One of Canada's most illustrious poets, Clarke is also known for documenting the experience and history of black Canadian communities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, creating a cultural geography in which he "Africadia".
