Rinehart is the Executive Chairman of Hancock Prospecting, a private mining and exploration company founded by her father, Lang Hancock. Rinehart was born in Perth, Western Australia, and spent her early years in Pilbara. She enrolled at St Hilda's Anglican School, then briefly attended the University of Sydney, dropping out of school to work with her father at Hancock Prospecting. She was Lang Hancock's only child, and when he passed away in 1992 - leaving a bankrupt property - she succeeded him as executive chairman. It turned a financially troubled company into Australia's largest privately held company and one of the world's largest private mining companies.
