Gus Green Van Sant Jr. is an American director, screenwriter, painter, photographer, musician and author who has been hailed as an independent and mainstream filmmaker. His films often deal with topics of socially marginalized cultures, especially homosexuality; therefore, Van Sant is considered one of the most prominent authors of the New Queer Cinema movement. Van Sant's early career was devoted to television advertising in the Pacific Northwest. He directed his film debut with Mala Noche. His second feature film, Drugstore Cowboy, was widely acclaimed and he won a screenwriter award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Association and the Best Director award from National Film Critics Association.
