Hampi or Hampe, also known as the Hampi Monuments Group, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the east-center of Karnataka, India. This is a Hindu pilgrimage center. Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century. The chronicles of Persian and European tourists, especially the Portuguese, say that Hampi was a prosperous, rich and vast city close to Tungabhadra River, with many temples, farms and markets. In 1500 AD, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the second largest medieval city in the world after Beijing, and possibly India's richest at the time, attracting merchants from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim monarchs; Its capital was conquered, looted and destroyed by the emperor's army in 1565, after which Hampi lay in ruins.
