The first woman to play full-time professional hockey in a position other than goalkeeper, she is a Canadian hockey player. In 2003, she began performing professionally in Europe.

Hayley Wickenheiser is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current Toronto Maple Leafs Assistant Director of Player Development. She was the first woman to play professional hockey full time in a defensive position. Wickenheiser was a member of Canada's National Women's Ice Hockey Team for 23 years, from 1994 until his retirement on 13 January 2017, and was the team's career leader with 168 goals. won and 211 assists in 276 games. She has represented Canada at the Winter Olympics five times, won four gold and one silver and twice was named the tournament's MVP, and once at the Summer Olympics in softball. She joined teammates Caroline Ouellette and Jayna Hefford on the record for the most gold medals by all Canadian Olympic athletes and is considered by many to be the greatest ice hockey player of all time. On 20 February 2014, Wickenheiser was elected to the Athletes Committee of the International Olympic Committee.
