Hugo Sánchez Márquez is a former professional Mexican football player and coach who played as a striker. A seasoned goalscorer known for his spectacular goals and saves, Sánchez is widely regarded as Mexico's best player of all time. In 1999, the International Federation of Football Statistics and History voted Sánchez as the 26th best player in the 20th century and the best player in the CONCACAF region. In 2004, Sánchez was named on FIFA's list of the 100 greatest players in the world. He is the fourth top scorer in La Liga history, the third top foreign scorer behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and the seventh top scorer in Real Madrid history. He has scored a total of 562 career goals for club and country in 956 appearances. Sánchez began his career playing for the Universidad Nacional Club in 1976 and was briefly loaned to the San Diego Sockers of the North American Football Championship in 1979
