Garten's mother-in-law bought her a subscription to the Time Life cookbook and influenced her. She then relied on intuition and feedback from friends and customers to refine her recipes. She is mainly overseen by the greedy Eli Zabar and Martha Stewart. Among its dishes are heart with cream, celeriac remoulade, clafouti pear and a simplified version of beef bourguignon. His culinary career began with his delicacy, Barefoot Contessa; Garten then expanded into some of the best-selling cookbooks, magazine articles, personal consumer products and the popular Food Network TV show.
