About Ingrid Newkirk

Newkirk is best known for co-founding People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which was essential in gaining a 1985 revision to the Animal Welfare Act in the United States.

In the early 1970s, she became involved in the animal rights movement, helping to pass legislation that established a public fund for veterinary treatment and the first spaying and neutering clinic in Washington, D.C. She and fellow activist Alex Pacheco launched PETA a decade later.
