Irama is the term used to refer to the tempo of the Indonesian gamelan in Java and Bali. It can be used with construction tools. It is a concept used in Javanese gamelan music, describing the relationships of melodic tempo and density between balungans, the elaboration of the instruments and the structure of the gong. It differs with the tempo, as each Irama can be played at a different tempo. Thus, Irama combines "the rate of time throughput and time density"; and time density is the main factor. One way to think of Irama is to use the most appreciated instrument in the gamelan, the saron panerus. In some episodes, he plays once for each note in the balungan. In others, it can be played twice as often, or four times, because the balungan's notes are more extensive. This corresponds to a slower Irama. In most cases, the more widespread the balungan is, the longer it will take to reach a gong age.
