Isabel Angélica Allende Llona is a Chilean writer. Allende, whose work sometimes contains aspects of the magical realism genre, known for novels like The House of Souls and The City of Beasts, has been very successful commercially. Allende has been called "the world's most read Spanish speaking author". In 2004, Allende was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Literature, and in 2010, she received the National Prize for Chilean Literature. President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. Allende's novels are often based on personal experience and historical events, and at the same time show respect for the lives of women, while also mixing elements of myth and reality. She has lectured and visited many colleges in the United States to teach literature. Fluent in English, Allende obtained US citizenship in 1993, has lived in California since 1989, the first time with an American husband.
