Rotten Ralph is a cat featured in 20 picture books written by Gantos and illustrated by Nicole Rubel from 1976 to 2014. Joey Pigza is a boy with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, appearing in 5 novels. From 1998 to 2014. Gantos won the 2012 Newbery Medal from the American Library Association, recognizing the Dead End of Norvelt as "the best contributor to American children's literature" from the previous year. Dead End also won the 2012 Scott O'Dell Prize for Historical Fiction Book and entered the UK Guardian Awards long list. His 2002 dissertation, Hole in My Life, was ranked first book of honor for the ALA Printz Prize and the Sibert Medal. Previously, Gantos was a US National Book Award finalist and Newbery Prize finalist for two books by Joey Pigza.
