John "Jack" Patrick Metcalfe is an Australian athlete who has competed in high jumper, long jump and javelin, although he is best known as a triplayer. He attended Sydney Men's High School and competed for the University of Sydney Athletics Club. At the 1934 Reich Games, Metcalfe won the triplet and won the bronze medal for the long jump. In the high jump content, he finished fourth. Competing in Sydney on December 14, 1935, Metcalfe set a new world record in three-step jump, with a jump of 15.78 meters. In 1936, Metcalfe won a bronze medal for the men's triathlon at the Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Winner Naoto Tajima from Japan broke Australia's world record in the competition. It was later reported that Metcalfe, the self-coaching, was assisting the Japanese athletes during the match and German officials complained. Metcalfe also participated in the high jump competition and finished twelfth.
