Jack William Nicklaus, nicknamed The Golden Bear, is a retired American professional golfer. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time. He has won 117 professional tournaments during his career. In a quarter of a century, he has won a record 18 major championships, three times more than second-ranked Tiger Woods. Nicklaus focuses on major championships - the Masters Tournament, the US Open Championship, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship - and plays a selective schedule of regular PGA Tour events. He has appeared in 164 majors, more than any other player, and finished with 73 PGA Tour wins, finishing third behind Sam Snead and Woods. Nicklaus won the American Amateur in 1959 and 1961 and finished second in the American Open in 1960, two strokes behind Arnold Palmer. Nicklaus became professional at the age of 21 at the end of 1961. He won his first professional win at the 1962 US Open, beat Palmer with three shots in the 18-hole playoff the next day and started a showdown between golf superstar.
